Well, that depends. Firstly, you need to work out the area of garden that you need to cover (in square metres). This is not a precise art in most cases, as gardens tend to be uneven in shape and difficult to measure. The most accurate way to measure an odd shaped garden is to imagine it as a square or rectangle by estimating the areas inside and outside the imaginary area. For example, a garden which is 10 metres long, 1 metre wide at one end and two metres wide at the other, could be deemed to have an average width of 1.5 metres. The area would therefore be 10 metres by 1.5 metres, or 15 square metres. Of course if your gardens are rectangular in shape it will be easy to measure exactly how much you need.
For the purpose of 'stepping out' the measurement, rather than measuring exactly with a tape measure, a largish step by an average sized person is approximately 1 metre.
Calculating the amount of product you need
Firstly, you will need to decide which product you will be using, as coverage is related to the size of the product. ie - smaller sized pebble will go further than a larger grade. Next, once you have determined which product you will use, you will know what depth you will need to lay the products, and multiply the depth by the area to find out what volume of product you will need.
Example 1: total area is 18 square metres. Product is Goldrush pebble with a recommended minimum laying depth of 50mm (0.05 metres). Calculate 18 x 0.05 to get 0.9. The volume required is 0.9 cubic metres.
Example 2: total area of 20 square metres. Products is River Pebble 20-100mm, with a recommended minimum laying depth of 80mm (0.08 metres). Calculate 20 x 0.08 to get 1.6. The volume required is 1.6 cubic metres.
